Bandits operating in Kebbi South have issued a ₦100 million ultimatum to the Utouno community in Ngaski Local Government Area, threatening to launch an attack if the ransom is not paid. The warning was contained in a letter addressed to community leaders, which referenced the recent deadly assault on Woro village in Kwara State as a cautionary example.
The threat has sparked panic among residents, with some already fleeing to safer locations. Abbas Alkali, a local resident, said, “Some people have already left, but those of us who have nowhere to go remain praying for our safety.” Community leader Malam Ibrahim Bello has appealed to the government to urgently deploy military personnel.
The Kebbi State Government confirmed that security forces, including air surveillance units, have been dispatched to protect the area. Ahmed Idris, spokesperson for the governor, said the state is treating the threat with utmost seriousness and is acting proactively to prevent an attack.
The Lakurawa group has been blamed for recent attacks in Kebbi and neighbouring Sokoto State, resulting in dozens of deaths, kidnappings, and cattle rustling. Last week alone, eight communities in Arewa Local Government Area were attacked, with over 30 people killed.
Security analysts suggest the latest threat may be an attempt by the group to project strength despite suffering heavy losses last year, when joint security forces neutralised more than 80 bandits. Police have warned residents, particularly herders, to avoid moving cattle at night in high-risk areas.
Residents remain on edge, fearing an attack could come at any moment.
