The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the death of a 13-year-old boy allegedly shot by a soldier in Akwa Ibom State. The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day in the Ete community of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, causing significant tension among residents.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim, Timothy Daniel, was returning from a crossover church service with his 15-year-old sister when a soldier on guard duty at a residence housing expatriates allegedly harassed the girl. When she resisted, the soldier reportedly became aggressive.
Timothy confronted the soldier over the alleged harassment of his sister. The argument escalated, culminating in the soldier allegedly firing his weapon and killing the teenager on the spot. The shooting sparked panic in the community, disrupting New Year celebrations and leading to unrest that reportedly resulted in damage to a local politician’s vehicle.
The Army Public Relations Officer for the 2 Brigade confirmed the investigation has been handed over to the Military Police, assuring the public that due process will be followed.
