Anambra: Women leader allegedly sacked for supporting LP in 2023 election

  • Mrs. Favour Nworah, the APGA women’s leader in Ebenebe community, Awka South LGA, has been reportedly dismissed for her support of the Labour Party in the recent election.
  • The decision to sack Nworah was made based on allegations of her presence at Labour Party rallies and wearing their vest.
  • The community has witnessed protests by women demanding her reinstatement, accusing some community leaders of fueling the division.

Mrs. Favour Nworah, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) women’s leader of the Ebenebe community in Awka South Local Government Area, has allegedly been removed from her position for supporting the Labour Party during the last election.

The decision to dismiss her from her role as the Women President-General of Ebenebe Town Union, Women Wing (ETU WW), was made last month, citing her frequent appearance at Labour Party rallies and wearing their vest.

The sack of Mrs. Nworah has sparked protests within the community as women have taken to the streets, demanding her immediate reinstatement.

Led by Mrs. Florence Nnatu, the protesters accused certain community leaders of being responsible for the crisis that has caused division among the women.

Nnatu called on these leaders, including their husbands, to refrain from further exacerbating the situation.

Mrs. Nworah, when interviewed by journalists, admitted to supporting a Labour Party candidate for the House of Assembly position.

She explained that her support stemmed from the fact that the candidate, Mr. Onwuje, is her husband and had always stood by her side.

She also clarified that despite her support for Labour Party in that particular election, she remains a member of APGA and had actively campaigned for APGA and Prof. Soludo during the 2021 governorship elections.

Mrs. Nworah expressed her commitment to APGA and the efforts she had made to ensure the victory of Soludo, including utilizing her personal resources and dedicating her time and energy to campaign across various wards in Awka North.

It has been reported that Mrs. Josephine Okafor has been appointed as the new women’s leader to replace Mrs. Nworah. The appointment was allegedly made by the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ify Obinabo.

However, Commissioner Obinabo declined to comment on the matter when contacted by our correspondent.

Mrs. Nworah, who was elected to the position in 2019 for a four-year term, had not completed her tenure before being removed from office.

The dismissal of Mrs. Favour Nworah as the APGA women’s leader for her support of the Labour Party has caused discontent among women in the Ebenebe community.

The protests reflect the dissatisfaction with the decision and the belief that certain community leaders played a role in exacerbating the division among women. As the situation unfolds, the community awaits further developments and a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
