Akpabio nominated to participate in World Conference of Speakers of Parliament

Senate President Goodwill Akpabio has been appointed to the Preparatory Committee for the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.

A statement from the African Parliamentary Union (APU) to the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) confirmed Akpabio’s appointment.

“After the virtual meeting of the Geo-Political Group on March 7th, 2024, the following members have been designated to be in the Preparatory Committee for the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament,” the statement said.

Other committee members include Carolina Cerqueira, Speaker of the National Assembly of Angola; Adams Bictogo, Speaker of the National Assembly of Cote d’Ivoire; and Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the National Popular Assembly of Algeria.

Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, was elected into the Executive Committee of the IPU during its last conference in Luanda, Angola.

He led Nigeria’s delegation to the IPU’s 147th General Assembly in October 2023, ending a 59-year absence of Nigerians in the committee
