AFCON 2023: “Why We Lost to Super Eagles of Nigeria”, Angola Coach Explains

Pedro Goncalves, the manager of Angola’s Palancas Negras team, provided insights into why his squad succumbed to defeat against Nigeria during the quarter-finals match held on Friday, February 2 in Cote d’Ivoire.

The lone goal scored by Ademola Lookman during the first-half proved decisive and ultimately ended Angola’s run at this year’s ongoing CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to Sports Brief, Goncalves commented post-match that Nigeria possessed a formidable team and exhibited superior efficiency compared to their opponent.

The game was quite challenging and dwelling on the defeat is an unproductive approach. Our strikers failed to deliver while Nigeria displayed better efficiency.

According to Own Goal Nigeria, he added that his team experienced exhaustion as they played in three different cities while the Super Eagles had been based solely in Abidjan for all their matches.

From the beginning of the competition, Nigeria has remained in Abidjan while we (Angola) have had to play matches across three different cities. Although fatigue may have impacted our performance, it is not a valid excuse. Nonetheless, let us congratulate ourselves for making it this far.

As reported by FRESHREPORTERS NEWS, Nigerians celebrated after the Super Eagles secured victory over Angola’s Palancas Negras during the quarter-finals of 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Cote d’Ivoire. Lookman scored a goal that enabled qualifying into semi-final where they will confront either South Africa or Cape Verde.

Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, expressed that their win was hard-earned but well-deserved. According to him, the exceptional skills of each player contributed greatly to their victory. He also highlighted the final pass made towards Lookman who he predicts will most likely be named as the tournament’s best player.
