AC Milan officially designated Olivier Giroud as a goalkeeper on Sunday.
This decision came after the French striker’s outstanding performance as a goalkeeper during their match against Genoa, which played a crucial role in securing AC Milan’s position at the top of Serie A.
The situation unfolded on Saturday night when AC Milan‘s primary goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, received a red card in the 98th minute for a challenge on Genoa’s Caleb Ekuban, as spotted by VAR. With all substitutes used up, AC Milan had to think on their feet.
Surprisingly, Olivier Giroud, who is renowned for his scoring abilities at clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as the French national team, stepped up to fill the goalkeeper’s role.
Before this incident, AC Milan was leading 1-0 thanks to a goal by former Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in the 87th minute. They were desperately trying to hold onto their slim lead.

In the 105th minute, Genoa had a golden opportunity to score a late equalizer. George PuÈ™caÈ™ made a run towards the goal, but Giroud, now playing as the goalkeeper, rushed off his line and punched the ball away with a well-timed fist, preserving Milan’s lead.
