Abuja Set to Host Agricultural Journalism Conference

Leading media and agricultural experts are poised to gather in Abuja for the National Conference on Agricultural Journalism. This conference aims to delve into critical topics that impact the agricultural sector.

Under the theme “Agricultural Journalism in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects,” the inaugural edition of the event is tailored to address the significant hurdles that Nigeria’s agriculture is currently facing.

Collaboratively organized by FarmingFarmersFarms and Prime Progress newspapers, along with the Journalism Communication and Media Centre (JCM Centre), the conference enjoys the technical support of the Nigeria Media Innovation Programme (NAMIP).

The implementation is being overseen by the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF), affiliated with the MacArthur Foundation in the United States of America.

The Chairman of the National Conference Planning Committee, Dr. Adewale Kupoluyi, highlighted that the conference will feature esteemed experts from the fields of agriculture and communication.

Dr. Olufemi Oladunni, Executive Director of the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI) in Ilorin, Nigeria, is anticipated to deliver the keynote address.

Dr. Oladunni boasts a history of influential contributions to curriculum development and significant projects both domestically and internationally.

His expertise has been tapped by esteemed organizations such as the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Swiss government, and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), among others.

Dr. Kupoluyi further outlined that the two-day conference comprises five technical sessions and a special session.

Guest speakers, including Mr. Obinna Chukwuezie, founder of the Journalism Communication and Media Centre (JCM Centre) in Jos, will shed light on “Mainstreaming value-chain approach in #AgReporting.”

Additionally, Dr. Ijeoma Chibuogwu from the Department of Theriogenology at the University of Abuja will explore “Diversifying the Nigerian economy from oil to agriculture: the role of agricultural reporting.”

Ivor Price and Kobus Louwrens, Co-founders of Food for Mzansi in Western Cape, South Africa, will lead a special session on “Utilising technology to elevate agricultural journalism: A case study from Food for Mzansi, South Africa.”

The roster of speakers also includes Dr. Gabriel Nyitse from the Department of Mass Communication at Bingham University, Abuja, who will address “Media coverage of agriculture: Underreported issues in Nigeria.”
