In a daring rescue operation, the police in Anambra State successfully freed three kidnapped individuals who had been held captive by insurgents in a village within the state. The victims were found chained to building pillars at a compound belonging to Onyeka Aduba, popularly known as Totoritor, in Umuohi village, Okija.
The rescue operation took place on Friday, around 4 pm, when the Rapid Response Squad operatives from Awkuzu acted upon credible information.
According to a statement released by DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the spokesperson for the police command, two suspects, identified as Okika Chukwujekwu and Sylvester Okorie Ikwuanusi, have been arrested for further questioning.
The breakthrough in the case came following a confession made by the notorious gang leader, Totoritor, who had been arrested earlier and was already in police custody. On the 6th of July, one of the victims positively identified Totoritor, who had a gunshot injury at the time of arrest.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the rescued individuals had been kept incommunicado and chained to pillars within the compound for several weeks before their liberation. The police are currently making efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who managed to escape.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, urged the people of Anambra State to disregard any propaganda disseminated by outlawed groups. He called on citizens to continue collaborating with the police and other security agencies in the state to restore peace.
CP Adeoye encouraged residents to report any suspicious persons or unusual activities to the nearest police station or contact the Command Emergency number 112. Additionally, the statement mentioned the availability of the “npf rescue me app” for free download on both Android and Apple iOS devices, offering another means of reporting incidents promptly.
