According to a survey published by Bloomberg on Friday, 15 days prior to the February 25th presidential election, two-thirds of the respondents indicated their intention to vote for Obi.
A recent opinion poll conducted by Premise Data Corp for Bloomberg News has projected Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) as the leading candidate for the upcoming February 25th presidential election in Nigeria.
This result confirms an earlier poll conducted by Bloomberg in September of 2022, which also showed that Obi was leading the race.
The latest poll surveyed 3,973 Nigerians between January 26 and February 4, with respondents selected from quotas developed by age, gender, and location across the country’s six geopolitical zones.
The poll result, released on Friday, showed that 66 percent of the 93 percent of respondents’ votes were for Obi, while 18 percent went to Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 10 percent went to Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement on Friday, Bloomberg News said: “San Francisco-based Premise polled 2,384 Nigerians from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4 via a smartphone app. Submissions were selected from quotas developed by age, gender, and location across the country’s six geopolitical zones, the company said. Results were then weighted against the original quotas to ensure national representation.”
“Of the 92% of participants who said they’ve decided how to vote, 72% named Obi as their first choice,” the outlet said. “Of those who are still unsure, 45% said the 61-year-old is their preferred candidate.”
Additionally, the poll stated that 3,973 Nigerians were surveyed between September 5 and September 20. Before the recent poll, other surveys also projected Obi as the front-runner for the 2023 election.
Anap Foundation poll conducted in September showed that the LP flagbearer was leading the presidential race with 21 percent of the votes. Atiku and Tinubu were tied for second place, with Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) following closely behind.
However, the ruling APC, PDP, and NNPP have discredited the polls that show support for Obi. They believe that Peter Obi the labour Party candidate has no chance of winning the election.
Despite this, Obi continues to have a strong following, particularly among the youth, who are disillusioned with the nation’s political landscape. He is often referred to by his opponents as a “social media candidate”.
