An 11-year-old boy in Pennsylvania has been charged as an adult with criminal homicide after allegedly fatally shooting his adoptive father following an argument over bedtime and a Nintendo Switch.
According to court documents and police reports, the incident occurred shortly after midnight when the boy’s parents instructed him to go to bed. He reportedly became upset after his Nintendo Switch was taken away as punishment.
The boy allegedly searched for the gaming console inside the family’s gun safe. Unable to find it, he discovered the keys, opened the safe, retrieved a revolver, and shot his adoptive father, 42-year-old Douglas Dietz. Dietz was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child was taken into custody and appeared in court for a preliminary hearing wearing handcuffs and a jumpsuit. Prosecutors successfully argued that due to the severity of the charge, he should be tried as an adult.
The boy remains in custody as legal proceedings continue. The family has not issued any further statements.
