Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker, has shared his thoughts following Aisha Buhari’s recent statement that incoming presidents no longer have to travel abroad for medical treatment.
The first lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, expressed this viewpoint during the inauguration of the N21bn Presidential Wing at the State House Medical Centre in Abuja.
She revealed that the idea for the Presidential Wing had been conceived in 2017, inspired by her husband’s extended medical stay in London.
“I am filled with happiness and a sense of fulfillment,” she remarked. “Although we are leaving, we thank God the project has come to fruition.”
Aisha Buhari further explained the rationale behind the initiative, stating, “I have advocated for this for the past six years.
I initiated this project six years ago when my husband spent three consecutive months abroad. We have all the experts in Nigeria, and we only need a good platform.”
She continued, “The hospital that is meant to serve the First Family is currently serving around 35,000 people, which is quite substantial. That’s why I insisted on having a VIP Wing in close proximity to the presidential villa.”
Highlighting the purpose of the Presidential Wing, she added, “This facility is dedicated to the health and well-being of the First Family. They no longer need to travel abroad. Instead, we can bring in experts to assist our people. You know, there is no longer a need for any leader to spend months and months abroad for healthcare.”
In response to Aisha Buhari’s statement, Shehu Sani took to Twitter to express his perspective.
He noted the irony of the Buharis’ lack of trust in and utilization of the Villa Clinic throughout their eight years in power, while expecting future presidents to do the opposite.
“They never trusted and patronized their Villa Clinic for eight years,” Sani wrote. “Now they have furnished it and want the next President to do so.”
It remains to be seen how the incoming administration will approach the utilization of the Presidential Wing and the healthcare options available to them.
