General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has sent warm wishes to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, on reaching the incredible milestone of 90 years.
In a statement released on Saturday from Abuja, Major General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, shared that the CDS expressed joy and admiration for Gowon’s efforts during his time as Nigeria’s leader from 1966 to 1975. Musa reflected on how Gowon navigated the stormy waters of that era, working tirelessly to keep the country united and at peace, even in the face of daunting challenges.
Musa pointed out that Gowon’s leadership and service weren’t just impressive—they left a mark on Nigeria’s history that can’t be erased.
“It’s well-documented,” Musa remarked, “that Gowon’s dedication to peace and reconciliation, especially after his famous ‘no victor, no vanquished’ speech at the end of the civil war, played a huge role in shaping a more stable and thriving Nigeria.”
He went on to say, “As a truly detribalized Nigerian and a peace ambassador, General Gowon has continued to serve humanity through his NGO, the Yakubu Gowon Foundation.”
The CDS noted that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) recognize Gowon’s many contributions to the nation and deeply respect the legacy he has built over the years.
Musa emphasized that Gowon’s values—discipline, dedication, patriotism, and a vision of a united Nigeria—still inspire military personnel and civilians across generations.
