The Kwara State Fire Service has made a grim discovery, as they successfully recovered the lifeless body of a 57-year-old woman, Mrs. Jamiu Sikirat, from a domestic well in Ilorin.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, June 19, 2023, around 6:42 pm, when Sikirat fell into the well while fetching water at Ile-Onikoko Compound in the Adeta area of Ilorin West Local Government Area.
Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the spokesperson for the fire service, confirmed the incident in an official statement. He stated that the brigade was alerted through a phone call from Mr. Muhammad Jamiu, a resident of the neighborhood. Promptly responding to the distress call, firemen swiftly retrieved the woman’s body from the well. In the presence of officers from the Nigerian Police, Adewole Division Ilorin, the deceased’s remains were handed over to Alfa Abdulganiyu Akuko, a family member.
Investigations revealed that Sikirat had gone to the well to fetch water when tragedy struck. In the process, one of her legs slipped off the ground, causing her to lose balance and fall into the well. The untimely demise has left the community in shock and grief.
Expressing his sorrow over the unfortunate incident, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, urged the public to exercise caution in their day-to-day activities. He specifically advised against sending underage children to fetch water from domestic wells, emphasizing the importance of safety and vigilance.
