President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive against the creation of unauthorised islands and developments on coastal setback zones, declaring an end to what he described as illegal and environmentally hazardous encroachments.
Speaking in Lagos on Thursday at the official commissioning of the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road, the President warned that the Federal Government will no longer tolerate unapproved land reclamation and construction projects along Nigeria’s waterfronts.
He described the road as a vital piece of legacy infrastructure expected to streamline port logistics, reduce operational costs for users, and boost economic returns through improved connectivity.
Tinubu turned his attention to what he described as “illegal island creation” and unregulated land reclamation, which he said undermines long-term infrastructure planning and national development objectives.
He said:
” I have directed the Minister of Works, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, and all state governors—this legacy project must be protected.
“Let us procure a stable setback for future expansion and infrastructure building to enhance our road architecture.
“Please, our dear governors, let’s work together. Don’t give planning approvals without collaborating with the Surveyor-General of the Federation and Ministry of Works.
“I’m glad the Deputy Governor of Lagos State is here, taking note—we will revoke all those approvals already given on the setback. No more planning approvals for those unapproved islands being created illegally.” [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>
