An Anambra committee assigned to investigate the controversy surrounding Joy Mmesoma’s purported high score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has revealed that the candidate admitted to faking her results.
In May, Mmesoma, a student of Anglican Girls Secondary School in Nnewi, Anambra state, gained significant attention after it was claimed that she had achieved a remarkable score of 362 in the 2023 UTME.
Despite the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) not officially announcing Mmesoma as the top performer, she received widespread acclaim. In response to her reported achievement, automobile businessman Innocent Chukwuma awarded her a scholarship worth N3 million.
However, JAMB later announced that Mmesoma’s actual score was 249, not the previously claimed 362. The examination body stated that she had fabricated her results in an attempt to mislead the public. Consequently, a committee was formed to thoroughly investigate the matter.
The recently concluded report from the Anambra-constituted panel reveals that Mmesoma did, indeed, falsify her UTME results. The panel of inquiry has determined that she must issue a written apology to JAMB, Anglican Girls Secondary School, and the Anambra state government.
