Chijioke Emmanuel, a Student Union Government Public Relations Officer from the Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, has called on the Federal government to find a lasting solution to the persisting strike action that has grounded academic activities in various Universities.
The renowned student activist told Punch Newspapers correspondent that the development is heart-breaking, while also advising the Federal government to prevent future strikes by “fulfilling the reasonable demands of the Academic Staff Union Of Universities as far as infrastructural development of universities academic welfarism is concerned.”
He further made it known that persistent industrial actions and underfunding of public universities would have heavy effects on the country’ economy.
“This is disdainful on the part of the Federal Government, for the government ought to know that national development, scalability and international industrial competitiveness of any nation are driven by sound and quality education at all levels, especially at the tertiary/university level. And any form of neglect in this part will plunge the nation into underdevelopment, long term.” he disclosed.” he disclosed.
Chijioke Emmanuel, however called on the striking academic union, ASUU, to be considerate and employ another means of pressing their demands rather than shutting down institutions of learning.
He said “ASUU, on the other hand, should be considerate in making demands and probably find another alternative to pressing home their demands than strike actions”
