UK University Orders Nigerian Students To Leave School Over Unpaid Fees

Nigerian students at Teesside University in the United Kingdom have been advised to leave the institution and return home due to unpaid fees.

The students were barred from continuing their education and called the Home Office following the depreciation of the Naira, which wiped away their money.

A university spokeswoman told the BBC on Wednesday, May 22, that the university had “no choice” but to notify the Home Office as nonpayment constituted a violation of the visa sponsoring rules. The Home Office stated that the organization made the choices on sponsoring visas.

Following the involuntary withdrawal of certain students from their classes and the freezing of their university accounts due to nonpayment, a group of students—60 of whom gave their identities to the BBC—started pressuring the institution for assistance.

After missing one payment, Adenike Ibrahim, a student who had been studying for two years, was expelled from her course and reported to the Home Office. Ibrahim was on the verge of submitting her dissertation.

She said: “I did default [on payments], but I’d already paid 90% of my tuition fees and I went to all of my classes, I called them and asked to reach an agreement, but they do not care what happens to their students.

“It has been heartbreaking for my son especially, he has been in so much distress since I told him,” Ms Ibrahim added. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
