Manchester United’s struggles continued with a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday, extending a dismal run for their marquee summer signing, Manuel Ugarte.
Since his high-profile €50 million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, Ugarte has now started seven consecutive Premier League matches without a victory under manager Ruben Amorim. All seven appearances have resulted in defeats, including recent losses to Wolves, Crystal Palace, Everton, and the latest setback against Aston Villa.
Fans have taken to social media to humorously label the trend the “Agent 007” curse, referencing the zero wins and seven losses. However, some supporters have defended the midfielder, pointing to mitigating factors like the absence of key teammates, most notably captain Bruno Fernandes, and broader systemic issues plaguing the team. The loss leaves United in seventh place with 26 points from 17 matches.
Despite the mounting pressure, manager Ruben Amorim has maintained his public backing of Ugarte but has simultaneously called for a significant improvement in the player’s training performances as the squad prepares for a critical Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle United.
