Steve Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, arrived in Israel on Thursday, 31st of July 2025, in a diplomatic push to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
His visit comes amid growing international condemnation of the catastrophic hunger situation in Gaza, where nearly the entire population is facing acute food insecurity and over half a million people are at risk of starvation.
The visit marks the first high-level U.S. engagement with Israeli leadership since talks in Qatar broke down over a week ago.
Witkoff is expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem to explore options for increasing humanitarian aid and potentially reopening ceasefire negotiations.
The Trump administration has come under pressure both domestically and abroad to act decisively, especially as credible reports of child malnutrition and aid blockades continue to mount.
Trump’s recent statements have signaled a shift in rhetoric, acknowledging the crisis and placing blame on Hamas for prolonging the conflict.
However, critics argue that more tangible actions are needed, including unfettered aid access and a new negotiation framework.
U.S. lawmakers from both parties have voiced concern, with some calling the situation a “genocide” and demanding immediate humanitarian interventions.
