U.S. Gov’t reaffirms commitment to stronger ties with Nigeria

The United States has reaffirmed commitment to deepening ties with Nigeria, describing the country as a dynamic and influential nation with boundless potential for growth and partnership.

Newly appointed U.S. Consul-General, Rick Swart, made the remark on Thursday during a reception held in his honour in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Swart emphasised the U.S. government’s dedication to promoting sustainable development through increased trade, investment, and innovation between both countries.

He highlighted Nigeria’s vibrant economy and the entrepreneurial energy of its youth as key strengths that offer vast opportunities for collaboration.

Swart, who represents the U.S. government in 17 southern Nigerian States, is tasked with overseeing initiatives that strengthen bilateral relations, including expanding people-to-people connections and supporting shared security and economic priorities.

During his three-year tenure, he pledged to focus on making both nations “safer, stronger, and more prosperous.”

He said:

“I look forward to working with U.S. and Nigerian businesses to further unlock that potential.

“Bonnie and I are happy to be here in Lagos, a city that pulses with energy, creativity and ambition.

“We are eager to immerse ourselves in the culture, engage with the people, and work alongside all of you to advance the shared goals of our countries across the 17 states in our consulate region.

“I constantly remind myself that diplomacy is not just a profession, it is a privilege, and I am honoured to serve in this globally-dynamic and influential nation.”
