In an unexpected move, Elon Musk, the executive chair and CTO of Twitter, has implemented new daily limitations on user activity, causing frustration among the platform’s users. Many Twitter enthusiasts were greeted with the dreaded notification “rate limit exceeded” when attempting to scroll through their feeds on Saturday. However, the reason behind these restrictions, although stated as data scraping and system manipulation prevention, has left users dissatisfied.
The timing of Musk’s decision to enforce the limitations over a holiday weekend has raised eyebrows. Verified accounts, typically associated with public figures and influencers, are now restricted to reading only 6000 posts per day. Unverified accounts face even stricter limits, with a cap of 600 posts daily. Meanwhile, newcomers to the site with unverified accounts have to make do with a paltry limit of 300 posts per day.
While numerous users have voiced their complaints about the new restrictions, Musk appears unfazed by the backlash. In fact, he seems to relish in exacerbating the situation. In response to a tweet from popular YouTuber and philanthropist MrBeast (@MrBeast), who expressed his intention to explore the time it takes to view 6,000 posts, Musk replied with a calculated estimate of less than one hour and nine minutes.
NBC’s coverage of the limitations highlighted the public’s discontent, but Twitter’s response to CNBC’s request for comment was notably unhelpful, merely consisting of a poop emoji—an emblematic display of their disregard for user concerns.
As the uproar continues to grow, many users are left wondering about the long-term implications of these limitations and the impact on their Twitter experience. Despite the grievances expressed by the community, it remains to be seen whether Elon Musk will address their concerns or maintain his stance on the matter. Unfortunately, due to the imposed limits, gathering further responses to Musk’s news has become a challenge for users eager to share their thoughts on the issue.
