U.S. President Donald Trump sparked controversy and debate with remarks about Africa during a campaign-style speech in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
Addressing an economic forum focused on inflation and domestic manufacturing, Trump asserted that he personally ended the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. He went further, claiming that leaders from both nations subsequently invited American involvement in their resource sector: “They told me, ‘Please, please, we would like you to come and take our minerals.’ Which we’ll do,” the President stated, drawing a loud reaction from the audience.
The comments quickly dominated online discussion following the event. Critics immediately questioned the accuracy of the claim, labeling it a misrepresentation of U.S. diplomatic engagement in the Great Lakes region, which has a long and complex history of conflict and foreign intervention. Policy analysts warned that the language of “taking” minerals could be deeply inflammatory, recalling a painful colonial and post-colonial legacy of extractive exploitation.
Supporters of the President, however, interpreted the statement as a sign of decisive and assertive foreign policy. It remains unclear whether Trump’s claim reflects a formal diplomatic agreement, an informal conversation, or simply campaign rhetoric, as the U.S. government has not announced any new mineral-access deals with either country. The remarks turned what was meant to be a domestic-focused address into an international talking point.
