Tinubu Removes 5% Excise Duty on Telecom Services Under New Tax Law

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has scrapped the 5 per cent excise duty previously imposed on telecommunications services in Nigeria under the new tax laws.

The move is expected to ease cost pressures on millions of subscribers who have long complained about rising call and data tariffs.

The duty, introduced under the former administration, was widely criticized by industry stakeholders and consumer advocacy groups who argued that it stifled growth in the telecom sector and further burdened citizens already grappling with inflation.

With the removal, operators and subscribers alike are projected to enjoy some relief, even as the government seeks to balance revenue generation with policies that support economic growth and digital inclusion.
