Tinubu Approves Renaming of University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID to Muhammadu Buhari University in Honor of Late Ex-President

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Tinubu, has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The decision was made during a special FEC session held on July 17, 2025, in Abuja, where Tinubu praised Buhari’s decades of public service, integrity, and contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.

Describing Buhari as a leader of “austere honour” and “moral fortitude,” Tinubu emphasized that the renaming serves as a lasting tribute to a man who resisted political temptations and governed with transparency and courage.

The renaming of the institution has been met with mixed reactions, with some Nigerians applauding the gesture as a fitting recognition of Buhari’s legacy, particularly in the North-East, where his administration focused on reconstruction and counterinsurgency efforts.

Others, however, question whether this symbolic act should take precedence over addressing pressing challenges in Nigeria’s education sector.

The formal implementation of the name change will be coordinated by the Ministry of Education in the coming days, ensuring the university’s rebranding reflects Buhari’s enduring impact on national development.
