TETFUND to finance implementation of mini solar grids across Nigerian tertiary institutions

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa has met with various stakeholders including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFUND) Executive Secretary, Sonny S.T. Echono, on the implementation and funding of mini solar grids across various tertiary institutions.

The meeting was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Agenda to revitalise tertiary instructions and ensure sustainable energy supply.

In a statement via the Minister’s X on Thursday, 23rd of January 2025 he disclosed that the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), will oversee the entire project so as to enhance learning environments and quality education to students.

The statement reads:

“As part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR’s ongoing agenda to revitalize our tertiary institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, Monotechnics, and Colleges of Education) and ensure their path to sustainable energy sufficiency, yesterday I met with Mr Abba Aliyu, Director General of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono FNIA, Executive Secretary of TETFUND. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the implementation of mini solar grids (with a capacity of 2-12 megahertz) that TETFUND will fund for our higher institutions.

“The REA will serve as the technical consultant on this project, overseeing the scoping, design, and monitoring. By leveraging the REA’s extensive expertise, we are confident that once the mini grids are operational, they will improve capacity utilization, enhance the learning environment, and contribute to a better quality of education and life for students at these institutions.
