The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) is set to deliberate today, August 2, 2025, on whether to suspend its ongoing seven-day warning strike after receiving a fresh proposal from the Federal Government.
The proposal includes the withdrawal of a controversial circular on nurses’ wages, a promise to establish a department of nursing within the Ministry of Health, and commitments to improve allowances and review career progression structures.
This development follows days of crippled health services across federal hospitals in the country, with thousands of nurses and midwives staying away from work.
Patients have been discharged or left unattended in emergency wards, as union leaders insist that past agreements were poorly implemented.
The strike, which began on July 30, has also drawn attention to the mass exodus of Nigerian nurses abroad, driven by poor remuneration and harsh working conditions.
While the government is optimistic that the new offer will lead to a resolution, NANNM insists that the decision lies with its National Executive Council (NEC), which is meeting today.
If the offer is rejected, the union may issue a 21-day ultimatum, potentially escalating the action into an indefinite nationwide strike. The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to shape the future of industrial harmony in the Nigerian health sector.
