In a deeply distressing incident, two brothers were allegedly shot by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during a raid in Asaba.
The incident occurred on July 13, 2023, resulting in the death of two-year-old Ivan, while his younger brother, a little over a year old, remains hospitalized.
The disheartening event was brought to light by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who revealed that the brothers were hit by stray bullets while they were inside a shop with their mother.
Following the shooting, the mother swiftly rushed the injured children to the Federal Medical Center in Asaba, where unfortunately, Ivan succumbed to his injuries.
Upon learning of the incident, the brothers’ father approached the NDLEA officers involved, seeking answers and justice.
However, the officers quickly fled the scene, jumping into their vehicles to make their escape. Determined to seek accountability, the father pursued them and managed to capture the fleeing officers on camera.
The case has since attracted significant attention, prompting an investigation into the matter. Delta State Commissioner of Police, in response to the incident, has assured the public that a thorough investigation will be carried out. In light of the seriousness of the situation, a team led by Peter Ejemazu is actively following up on the case.
