A Nigerian soldier has been accused of shooting dead Balogun Sultan, a National Diploma II student at Yaba College of Technology, during a security operation in Lagos, leaving his family, friends, and classmates in mourning.
Sultan, enrolled in the school’s distance learning programme, was reportedly returning home after a routine examination day when the incident occurred. According to classmates, he had stayed back briefly to submit an assignment for his Research Methods course before beginning his journey home.
Sources said Sultan was struck by stray bullets allegedly fired by soldiers deployed to quell a reported cult clash near the WAEC bus stop, a normally busy area filled with students, traders, and commuters. Witnesses described scenes of chaos, gunshots, and people running for cover. In a video seen by SaharaReporters, Sultan was drenched in blood as bystanders tried to save him, pressing clothes against his wounds and praying for his survival.
He was rushed to the Military Hospital in Yaba, where doctors reportedly attempted chest surgery, but he ultimately did not survive.
