An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in Gubio Town, Borno, causing the catastrophic deaths of six Almajirai (students studying the Quran)
The sad incident happened on Saturday, January 27, when a metal scavenger mistakenly gathered and hoarded different metallic objects close to a Tsangaya school.
The scavenger was unaware that among the metal pieces he had gathered was an IED that had not been destroyed and had been abandoned. It exploded at 2:00 pm, killing the children and seriously injuring others.
It is important to note that Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State outlawed metal scavenging in July 2023 in response to allegations of damage of government buildings in abandoned towns.
In order to defend the prohibition on scrap metal scavenging, Governor Zulum highlighted the dangers that scavengers faced, as they were frequently the targets of rebel attacks while stealing goods from abandoned places.
Metal scavengers continued their operations unrestrained in spite of the official ban, which resulted in this tragic and totally avoidable loss of lives. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
