Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has issued a stark warning about the widespread impact of short-form video content, suggesting it is an invention that has actively diminished human well-being by damaging attention spans and cognitive health.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the statement in a wide-ranging interview released on December 9, 2025. When asked to identify an innovation that has “made us worse, not better,” Musk pointed to short-form videos, asserting they appear to be “rotting people’s brains.”
The phenomenon Musk referenced was popularized globally by TikTok, the Chinese-owned social media platform launched in 2016. TikTok pioneered the format of highly addictive, algorithm-driven videos lasting from a few seconds to one minute. Its massive success prompted other tech giants, including Facebook (Meta), Instagram, and YouTube, to integrate their own short-form video features, cementing the format’s dominance in digital culture.
