The Islamic State of the West African Province, a former affiliate of Boko Haram, and its fighters, the Buduma, have been engaged in fierce combat in the Lake Chad region for some time now, with several losses on both sides.
The latest conflict started on Saturday and lasted till Sunday, January 21, when the Boko Haram organization attacked the ISWAP position on the Island of Tumbum Jaki in Borno State with eight boats carrying fifteen fighters.
The incident was discovered to be retaliation for the ISWAP attack on January 15 at the camp of Abou Hurayra, a leader of the Boko Haram Buduma faction, on the Island of Kaduna Ruwa in Lake Chad, close to Kukawa Local Government Area.
According to the sources, many ISWAP militants were compelled to evacuate for fear of being eliminated on the battlefield, while a few of them lost their lives.
The new attack, according to additional sources, was intended to locate ISWAP strongholds Tumbum Jaki, Tumbum Kanta, Mangari, and Kaikura Dumba, as well as some of their fighters who were hibernating there.
The sources added that out of concern that the Boko Haram faction would overrun the camp, ISWAP had already moved its captives from Jubularam to a different hiding location in Tumbum Naira. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
