Russia Offers Support to Somalia’s Army in Fight Against Terrorist Groups

Russia has announced its readiness to provide military support to Somalia’s army in its ongoing battle against terrorist organizations, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The offer was extended following discussions with Somali Foreign Minister Abshir Omar Jama during their meeting in Moscow.

Lavrov emphasized that Moscow remains committed to meeting the material needs of Somalia’s armed forces as they combat extremist groups such as al-Shabaab and al-Qaeda, which continue to pose a threat within Somali territory.

This gesture by Russia underscores its increasing interest in the African continent, positioning itself as a significant player in countries grappling with conflicts, often challenging Western influence.

Notably, Russian private military company Wagner has established a presence in several African nations, including the Central African Republic, Mali, Mozambique, and Libya.

Somalia has been a target of frequent attacks by extremist groups, particularly al-Shabaab, impeding the nation’s recovery from decades of conflict.

Recently, the Somali government launched a major offensive against al-Shabaab, marking a significant effort to counter their influence.

Russia’s strategy in Africa involves forming alliances with regimes or governments facing Western rejection or internal insurgencies.

In exchange for Russian military support, these African leaders grant Russia access to valuable resources such as oil, gas, gold, diamonds, and minerals.

This approach has granted Russia increased influence in the region, as evidenced by the support received from African nations during a United Nations vote on a resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine.

Out of the 35 countries that abstained from the vote, 17 were African states, showcasing Russia’s growing ties on the continent.

Somalia, despite previously supporting a resolution in favor of Ukraine, has been working towards improving its relations with Russia.

The diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed in 1978 when the Soviet Union backed Ethiopia in a war against Somalia.

Now, with Russia’s offer of military support, Somalia seeks to reestablish and strengthen its relationship with Moscow in the face of ongoing security challenges.
