Mixed reactions have followed a recent statement by a faction of the Labour Party (LP), which has threatened to suspend its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over concerns about his academic records.
The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, issued a statement demanding that Obi make his academic records public and address discrepancies in his certificates within 48 hours.
They questioned the identity and academic history of a supposed deceased elder brother of Peter Obi, which had been a subject of controversy.
Arabambi criticized Tanko Yinusa, the spokesperson for the Peter Obi/Datti Ahmed presidential campaign council, for dismissing these allegations as baseless.
He called for clarity on various issues, including the names on Peter Obi’s birth certificate, school certificate, university certificate, and NYSC certificate.
Arabambi warned that failure to address these discrepancies within 48 hours would lead to Peter Obi’s suspension from the party.
These developments come as other presidential candidates, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and the Labour Party, have contested President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s identity and academic records at the Supreme Court, following their defeat in the February 25th presidential election.
