Chaos erupted in Baghdad as protesters stormed and set fire to Sweden’s embassy in the Iraqi capital early Thursday morning.
The protest was triggered by news of a planned burning of a Koran in Sweden, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations.
Videos circulating on social media captured the disturbing scene as the embassy was engulfed in flames.
Demonstrators were seen waving flags and holding copies of the Koran while breaching the embassy’s compound by climbing over fences.
The roots of the protest trace back to an application reportedly granted by Swedish police for a demonstration to be held outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm on the same day.
Disturbingly, the planned protest in Sweden involved two individuals intending to burn both a copy of the Koran and the Iraqi flag, fueling anger and resentment among Iraqis.
