Protest in Kenya, led predominantly by the youth, have escalated into a nationwide movement demanding President William Ruto’s resignation.
It was Sparked initially by opposition to the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which proposed steep tax hikes on essential goods, the demonstrations have since broadened into a revolt against police brutality, government corruption, and economic mismanagement.
On 25th of June 2025, thousands of youths took to the streets to mark the one-year anniversary of the deadly anti-tax protests, which saw at least 60 fatalities last year.
This year’s protests have already resulted in 16 deaths, mostly from police gunfire, and over 400 injuries, further fueling public anger. The youth, organizing largely through social media, have rejected Ruto’s appeals for dialogue, insisting on systemic change and accountability for the lives lost.
President Ruto, facing the most severe crisis of his presidency, has struggled to quell the unrest. Despite withdrawing the Finance Bill in 2024 and restructuring his cabinet, public trust has eroded due to persistent corruption, rising living costs, and brutal police crackdowns.
The recent killing of Albert Ojwang an influencer in police custody and the close-range shooting of a civilian during protests have intensified calls for justice and Ruto’s ouster.
With protests spreading to major cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, and the government resorting to internet shutdowns and live-fire suppression, Kenya’s political future remains deeply uncertain as the youth-led movement shows no signs of backing down. [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>>
