During the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu, a momentary disturbance occurred when a soldier from the presidential guard brigade collapsed at the parade ground.
The identity of the young female soldier has not been disclosed, but she was swiftly attended to by medical personnel at one of the temporary clinics set up at Eagle Square, the venue of the ceremony.
According to witnesses interviewed by Punch, the soldier displayed signs of discomfort while on guard duty before collapsing.
Panic ensued among those present, fearing the worst.
She was quickly placed on a stretcher and taken to a nearby mobile clinic for immediate medical attention.
Although she regained consciousness after some time, she remained unable to resume her duties and nearly fainted once again.
Subsequently, she was transported to a military hospital for further medical care.
Inquiries made at the mobile clinics confirmed the incident, and Medic Alkali Yusuff, one of the assisting personnel, provided an account of the events.
He mentioned that they initially administered first aid treatment, but the soldier continued to feel dizzy and weak, eventually vomiting.
As she could not walk properly, she was brought back on a stretcher to one of the makeshift tents. Later, she was transferred to a military hospital for admission.
A senior medical official on duty clarified that the soldier’s collapse was attributed to food poisoning rather than exhaustion, debunking speculations.
Trauma surgeon Dr. Olanrewaju Olatunji shed light on the situation, explaining that although they managed to revive her initially, she vomited again after some time.
Due to her level of consciousness, the decision was made to evacuate her and refer her to an army hospital.
Dr. Olatunji suggested that her condition may have been caused by consuming unhealthy or improperly prepared food.
During the inauguration ceremony, each of the four mobile clinics was staffed by medical consultants specializing in various fields.
This ensured prompt medical attention to any emergencies that arose during the event.
The collaborative efforts of the medical personnel and other security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Guards Brigade, facilitated the safe and efficient evacuation of individuals in need of medical assistance.
While the soldier’s collapse briefly disrupted the proceedings, the swift response from the medical team ensured her well-being and allowed the inauguration ceremony to continue smoothly.
