Presidential election: Thanks for going to court, believing in judiciary – Buhari to Atiku, Peter Obi

  • President Buhari expresses appreciation for presidential candidates who pursued legal avenues after losing the last presidential election.
  • He commends their determination in seeking redress through the court system and praises their belief in Nigeria’s judiciary.
  • Despite political differences, Buhari urges all parties to accept court decisions and work together for a better Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his gratitude to the presidential candidates who chose to pursue legal action after losing in the recent presidential election.

In a nationwide broadcast on Sunday, Buhari commended the resilience and determination shown by these candidates in seeking redress through the court system, emphasizing their faith in Nigeria’s judiciary.

The election saw the victory of President-elect Bola Tinubu, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) experienced defeat. However, rather than accepting the election outcome, Atiku and Obi took their case to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

In a recent development, the Supreme Court dismissed a suit filed by the PDP seeking to halt Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29 due to alleged double nomination.

Despite this, President Buhari acknowledged that the last presidential election was one of the most hotly contested polls in Nigeria’s history.

President Buhari emphasized the importance of nurturing and improving the electoral process, suggesting that incremental progress is necessary for Nigeria to secure its rightful place among nations.

He stressed that the country’s democracy encourages candidates and political parties to seek legal redress for perceived injustices.

Regardless of the outcomes of these legal cases, President Buhari called upon all parties involved to accept the decisions rendered by the courts and unite in their efforts to build a better Nigeria.

He lauded the determination and resilience exhibited by all the presidential candidates and their political parties in trusting the country’s judicial system to address their grievances.

During the election campaigns, there were disagreements and debates on how to improve Nigeria.

However, Buhari emphasized that despite these differences, there was never any doubt or disagreement regarding the shared vision of a better Nigeria.

The President’s message sought to reinforce the notion that respect for the judicial system and acceptance of court decisions are fundamental to the growth and development of the nation.

In conclusion, President Buhari extended his appreciation to the presidential candidates who exercised their right to seek legal remedies for their concerns about the election results.

He affirmed the importance of building a united Nigeria, where despite political divisions, the judiciary serves as a cornerstone of justice and fairness.
