President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed his security chiefs to formulate a fresh blueprint that will serve as a guiding framework for security operations across the country.

This mandate came during Tinubu’s inaugural meeting with the security chiefs on Thursday, where he expressed his personal philosophy on handling security matters to achieve effective outcomes.

During the meeting, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Munguno, provided an overview of the discussions, highlighting President Tinubu’s emphasis on the importance of coordination among the intelligence chiefs. Tinubu made it clear that he would not tolerate a situation where security agencies acted independently and at odds with one another.

The gathering, the first of its kind since President Tinubu assumed office, included the Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao; Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba; Director-General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar.

According to Munguno, “The President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has just concluded a meeting with the General Security Appraisal Committee, comprising the Chief of Staff, service chiefs, Inspector General of Police, and heads of the intelligence agencies. This is the very first meeting he’s had with the heads of the security agencies, and it lasted for two hours.”

Having received briefings from the meeting participants, President Tinubu addressed the prevailing security challenges facing the nation and shared his philosophy on how to effectively handle them. He expressed his appreciation for the sacrifices and loyalty of the armed forces, intelligence agencies, and paramilitary organizations in defending the country against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, oil theft, sea robbery, and piracy. Tinubu reiterated his determination to build upon existing progress and reverse any misfortunes, steering the country towards greater heights.

President Tinubu stressed the need for the security agencies to intensify their efforts in moving the country forward. He emphasized contemporary security measures that align with the current requirements and stated that declining fortunes in national security were unacceptable. Tinubu emphasized the importance of coordination, calling for a clearing house to ensure unity of purpose among all agencies. Collisions and conflicting actions were deemed unacceptable.

Tinubu also announced forthcoming reforms in the security architecture, including a closer examination of challenges in the maritime domain, particularly oil theft. Such criminal activities will not be tolerated, and immediate action will be taken to address them. The President mandated the security agencies to promptly develop a blueprint, as time was of the essence. Tinubu also emphasized the importance of supporting the armed forces in operational endeavors, ensuring they are well-equipped, motivated, and provided with the necessary resources.

President Tinubu assured that he would leverage his authority to facilitate operational elements, and in turn, expected intelligence agencies to provide timely and relevant information to support their assignments.

As President Tinubu leads the charge for a revamped security apparatus, his focus on unity, coordination, and swift action aims to bolster the nation’s security and reverse the current challenges. His commitment to enabling the armed forces and demanding seamless collaboration from intelligence agencies reflects his determination to protect the country’s interests.

President Tinubu’s directive for a new security blueprint underscores his sense of urgency in addressing the prevailing security concerns. He recognizes that time is of the essence, and any necessary changes must be implemented swiftly. The President’s emphasis on the welfare of operatives on the ground demonstrates his understanding of the importance of providing adequate support to ensure their effectiveness in carrying out their duties.

In conclusion, President Tinubu’s meeting with the intelligence chiefs marked a significant step towards reevaluating and reshaping the nation’s security architecture. With a strong focus on coordination, unity of purpose, and prompt action, Tinubu aims to bolster the capabilities of the security agencies and achieve positive results in safeguarding the country’s stability and well-being.
