Pres. Tinubu warns developers against encroaching on Lagos-Calabar coastal highway setbacks

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday cautioned developers against building on the designated setbacks along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

He said:

“Let me, at this stage, warn all developers. The Federal Government will enforce the setbacks, if not for anything; it is for the interest of our nation,” Tinubu said at the commissioning of the first 30 kilometres of the highway in the Lekki area of Lagos.

“Development without approval will not be compensated (if demolished). We have gazetted and published the setbacks. We are going to enforce it rigidly in every way possible.”

A “setback” refers to the minimum required distance a building must be from a road or property boundary, typically ranging between 3 and 9 metres.

In Lagos, these regulations are enforced by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to promote safety, adequate ventilation, privacy, and urban planning standards.

President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern warning against the construction of houses or other structures within the designated setbacks along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. He emphasized that any such illegal structures will be demolished without compensation.

Tinubu also called on road users to take responsibility for preserving and maintaining the newly inaugurated section of the highway.

He said: “As we celebrate today, let us reflect on our collective responsibility to preserve our infrastructure. The government can build roads but this is left for us citizens to maintain.
