Poultry Farmers Laments Over Shàrp Decline In Egg Sales Amid Economic Hárdship

The Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria has raised concerns over the sharp decline in egg sales, blaming the economic downturn and reduced purchasing power of Nigerians.

During a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse, Jigawa State chairman Mr. Hussaini Gumel explained that the sector has been severely impacted since the removal of fuel subsidy.

“Many Nigerians can no longer afford eggs, and sales have plummeted,” Gumel said, attributing the crisis to rising economic hardship and soaring production costs.

He added that poultry farmers are also facing infrastructure challenges. “The poultry farmers also lack essential infrastructure, such as refrigerators and cooling devices, to preserve their products in the hot weather.”

Mr. Gumel called attention to disparities in feed prices across states. “It’s disheartening that chicken feeds are significantly cheaper in Jos, Plateau State, compared to Jigawa and many other states. This disparity has made it difficult for poultry farmers in Jigawa to maintain profitability.”

With eggs and chicken becoming less affordable for consumers, he warned the business is nearing collapse. “There’s no market for our products, and the lack of sufficient money in circulation among people is alarming,” he said.

“We’re appealing for government intervention to prevent losses due to d+maged products,” Mr. Gumel urged. “We need government support to facilitate training and empower our members, especially women at home who are engaged in poultry farming.”
