Pope Leo XIV, an avid tennis enthusiast, welcomed men’s world number one Jannik Sinner at the Vatican, the Holy See announced on Wednesday.
Sinner, currently competing in the Italian Open in Rome, was accompanied by his family and Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis Federation.
“The Pope’s passion for tennis is well known,” said the head of the Vatican press office in a brief statement. Reports indicate the 69-year-old, Chicago-born pontiff not only enjoys watching the sport but also playing it.
During an audience with international journalists on Monday, Pope Leo was invited to join a charity tennis tournament.
