The Enugu State Police Command has stirred outrage within the Muslim community after arresting the Director of the Islamic Centre, Uwani, 74-year-old Alhaji Musa Ani, and the Sarikin Hausawa of Enugu, Alhaji Suleiman Haruna Sule, over allegations of embezzling ₦100 million.
According to reports, both men are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). However, community members insist the allegation is a “trumped-up” attempt to embarrass Islamic leadership.
A petition filed by the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) to the National Security Adviser revealed that the arrests began on Friday, February 27, following a complaint from a tenant, Alhaji Ezeani Ibrahim. When the Sarikin Hausawa visited the police the next day to seek bail for Ani, he was also detained on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
The Muslim community has rejected the ₦100 million claim, stating that the centre operates on modest donations and has never handled such large sums.
