Rumors are circulating that some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including governors and chieftains, are planning to humiliate President Muhammadu Buhari over perceived anti-party policies.
Freshreporters Media reports that the Federal Government led by Buhari has supported the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Naira redesign and cash swap policy.
The set deadline by the central bank for the cash swap has caused widespread panic among Nigerians, who are rushing to obtain the new notes before the old ones become obsolete.
The shortage of naira notes and fuel has triggered widespread protests, leading to attacks on government properties and banks by frustrated Nigerians.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate, has faced widespread criticism from the public over the crisis caused by his party.
Due to the hardships caused by the shortages, many believe Tinubu’s presidential bid may be at risk of failure.
According to The Whistler, some members within the ruling party are planning to undermine the president’s authority in response to what is perceived as Buhari’s lack of support and indifference towards Tinubu’s presidential campaign.
The CBN Naira swap policy, which had set a deadline of February 10th, is now viewed by Tinubu and the APC governors backing him as evidence of sabotage from the presidency.
You’ll recall that Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, a strong supporter of Tinubu, has accused some individuals within Buhari’s presidency of collaborating with opposition parties.
“I believe there are elements in the villa that want us to lose the election because they didn’t get their way. They had their candidate, but their candidate didn’t win the primary election.
“I think they are still trying to get us to lose the election, and they are hiding behind the president’s desire to do what he thinks is right,” he had said in a recent interview.
“What El-Rufai said and the way he said shows there’s no respect for Buhari as a sitting president,” said the source.
In a viral video, El-Rufai was seen speaking in Hausa, urging people not to return their old Naira notes to the banks, and promising that the policy would be altered if Tinubu wins the presidential election.
A high-level government source informed The Whistler that certain interest groups are scheming to disgrace President Buhari out of office, referring to the comments made by Governor El-Rufai.
The source alleged that the aim is to make Buhari a powerless president for the remainder of his term, and added that those appointed by Buhari also harbor fears that a Tinubu presidency may not benefit them.
“These people are also afraid that Tinubu will not work with them if he wins because he has already formed his team, they have shared all the appointments, and there won’t be room for them,” the source said.
The source furthermore revealed that some governors are coming together to confront the plan to shame Buhari, and that this development would be seen in the coming days.
