Oxford English Dictionary Expands Its Lexicon with Popular Nigerian Words

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has formally recognized the global influence of Nigerian English by adding several popular Nigerian words and phrases to its latest December 2025 update.

This significant update, which includes over 500 new entries worldwide, features Nigerian terms such as:

· “Mammy market”: referring to on-base markets in military barracks.
· “Nyash”: a colloquial term for buttocks.
· “Amala”: a staple food made from yam flour.

The inclusion extends to other widely used West African expressions like “abeg,” “biko,” “moi moi,” and “Ghana Must Go”, cementing their place in the global English lexicon.

These additions underscore the expanding international reach of Nigerian culture, cuisine, and everyday language. It marks a significant milestone where local colloquialisms gain formal recognition on the world’s most authoritative stage for the English language, reflecting the dynamic and influential nature of Nigerian English.
