The customs boss has stated that only the President is authorized to reopen the country’s borders and discussions are currently underway. The reason for this decision could be due to concerns regarding hunger among citizens.
On Saturday, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service stated that only President Bola Tinubu has the authority to reopen borders within the country.
He made this statement during an interaction session with members of the Kongolam border community in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Adeniyi was reacting to agitation for the reopening of borders and assured that engagements and consultations were being made regarding this issue.
“Once the consultations are concluded, a decision will be made on the matter,” he said.
According to Adeniyi, the service will focus on removing obstacles that militate against free trade in line with the present administration’s agenda of fostering economic prosperity.
He said that proactive measures have been employed to reduce the number of checkpoints along the border posts and promote synergy between Service personnel and traders.
“We are aware of the concerns from border communities, specifically regarding the number of checkpoints and land borders being closed.”
“I assure you that our operations are always guided by the law, and we only operate within delegated powers.”
“We have conveyed the concerns and complaints of residents in border communities to the President.”
“As he has attentive ears and directed us to release confiscated food items, we can only sell them in Nigerian markets,” he said.
Adeniyi stated that the service is collaborating with the police and other sister agencies to address obstacles hindering free trade in border areas.
“We know that there are markets around our borders, and we know that not all of them aim to smuggle goods across the border.”
“We will continue to monitor and ensure that the food produced in Nigeria remains within the country for consumption. This is because we are currently experiencing a national emergency related to insufficient food supply.”
