Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the culture of “transactional politics” in Nigeria, saying politicians often pay youths to att+ck voices advocating for a better future.
Speaking during an event at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., Obi lamented the widespread practice where young people — the very demographic whose future is at stake — are used to fuel division and conf¥sion online.
“People pay them to cause conf¥sion. As I am here now, go to social media. All those that are being paid N20,000 or N40,000 monthly are youths whom you are f+ghting for their lives because at over 60, I have just few years to go but we can get it right,” Obi said.
Obi, who ran for president in Nigeria’s 2023 general election under the Labour Party platform, has continued to advocate for governance reforms, youth empowerment, and the building of strong democratic institutions.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s future depends on the younger generation recognizing their role and resisting being weaponized by political actors.
