National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, on Thursday presented a customised Super Eagles jersey to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in appreciation of the President’s backing for sports development.
During the meeting, Dikko submitted the Commission’s 2025 annual report and outlined its strategic plans for 2026. He highlighted key achievements under the current administration, including 375 medals won across various competitions, a 1.2 per cent contribution to Nigeria’s GDP from sports, N50 billion mobilised in private sector investment, and the creation of over 140,000 jobs within the sports industry.
Dikko also announced the restoration of Nigeria’s anti-doping compliance status after a 20-year hiatus, describing the development as a significant boost to the country’s international sports credibility.
He further disclosed that discussions during the meeting touched on a petition submitted to FIFA regarding allegations that the Democratic Republic of the Congo fielded ineligible players during a World Cup playoff. However, he emphasised that the Commission’s core focus remains grassroots and domestic sports development.
In response, President Tinubu directed the prompt release of budgetary allocations to support local sports programmes and sustain the sector’s growth.
