Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last elections, has strongly opposed the proposed salary increment for elected politicians and public office holders in Nigeria.
The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) recently announced a 114 percent increase in the salaries of politicians, judicial officials, and public office holders, citing the provisions of the constitution.
In response to this development, Obi took to Twitter on Thursday to express his concerns about the timing and necessity of such an increment.
He emphasized that Nigeria is currently grappling with harsh economic realities and increasing poverty levels, making it crucial to focus on reducing the cost of governance and channeling the savings towards poverty alleviation.
Obi called for an immediate reversal of the proposed salary increment, urging leaders to prioritize the welfare of the masses and those in the lower socio-economic strata.
He highlighted the need for creative solutions to lift the majority of Nigerians out of poverty, particularly in rural areas. Obi argued that leaders should bear the sacrifice during this challenging time in the nation’s history.
The RMAFC chairman, Muhammad Shehu, had justified the salary review, stating that it was long overdue. However, Obi’s opposition reflects a growing sentiment among citizens that the government should prioritize the pressing needs of the people and exercise financial prudence, rather than increasing the remuneration of public officials.
