NOA Alerts Residents of Akwa Ibom State About Circulation of Fake ₦1,000 Notes

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has alerted the public to the widespread circulation of counterfeit ₦1,000 notes across several coastal communities in Akwa Ibom State.

The warning, issued on 1st of August 2025, follows multiple reports from local traders and point-of-sale operators who have unknowingly accepted fake currency in local markets.

Communities most affected include Udung Uko, Mbo, Oron, Okobo, and Ibeno, where syndicates are allegedly operating with precision.

According to the NOA State Director, Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, the fake notes in circulation bear batch numbers 364232 and 898248, and are distinguishable by their blurred portraits, distorted watermarks, and defective security threads.

He described the trend as “unpatriotic and heinous,” warning that such acts could destabilize the local economy and erode public confidence in financial transactions. The agency has begun community sensitization efforts to help residents detect counterfeit bills.

Residents are urged to scrutinize all cash transactions, especially during market hours when the fake notes are often circulated.

The NOA also called on security agencies to intensify surveillance in the affected areas and prosecute those behind the crime. Mkpoutom appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious currency or individuals to the nearest authorities.
