Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has addressed ongoing debates surrounding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its connection to rising insecurity in the South-East region.
Governor Soludo, who has voiced his support for Kanu’s release in the past, emphasised that the two issues—Kanu’s detention and the escalating security challenges in the South-East—are separate matters.
Soludo, in a carefully worded statement, made it clear that while he has consistently called for Kanu’s release, this stance should not be misconstrued as a direct solution to the region’s security woes.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) for almost five years, following his controversial arrest in Kenya by Nigerian authorities.
Despite widespread calls from various groups advocating for his release, the government has maintained his detention.
Some proponents of Kanu’s freedom believe that his release could pave the way for peace in the South-East, where insecurity has spiraled in recent years.
Soludo said:
“The release of Nnamdi Kanu for me is different from the issue of security, I separate the two, I don’t link the two. Nnamdi Kanu for me, is for us to have a conversation of a long-term future for the Igbos and that is a different conversation.
